Summary
Anis Zaki, a modest civil servant in the Ministry of Health, met by chance, Ragab, a former student become an actor who invited him to come with the "kingdom". This is a barge moored to a bank of the Nile whose occupants: a translator, a critic, a writer, a lawyer and a businessman meet to smoke hashish and drink alcohol and meet women. Until Samara Bahjat, a young journalist, disturbs the meetings of the Nihilists denouncing their practices. She gets them to confront reality by pushing them to confess to a crime they have committed in a car accident. Only Anis Zaki will become aware of this madness but at what price ...
This film is based on the new "ChitChat on the Nile", written by Naguib Mahfouz, Nobel Laureate for Literature in 1988. He denounced the government of Nasser and the decadence of Egyptian society that followed. Filmed in the 70s at the time of President Sadat, the film adaptation of "ChitChat on the Nile" lets the message be spread to a wider audience.
The few shots of the Cairo streets teeming with people, sunveil a people whose very appearance contrasts with what we usually see today: bell-bottomed trousers' and short skirts replace veils and galabeyya. This semblance of freedom is an illusion is perfectly demonstrated in the film. Indeed, the place of escape, symbolized by a barge, allows actors belonging to different social classes to forget reality and hypocrisy of Egyptian life and escape through drugs.
The more the film approaches its end, the more the characters' behaviour degenerates under the influence of drugs - except Anis Zaki who, while being aware of the consequences of their actions, fall into the most full defeatism. During a trip by car that will culminate in a drama, the actors explore the archaeological site of Memphis. They climb, wallow and smoke hashish on the reclining statue of Ramses II, symbolising the prestigious Egyptian Empire, which they designate as their grandfather, himself destroyed by the intoxication of drugs.
The burlesque attitude and acting of the actors, against a backdrop of a tragic reality, makes this film of Kamal Hussein a prime example of Egyptian cinema this time.
